Samsung Galaxy Alpha Review

Seeking to redefine the concept of their flagship Galaxy series, Samsung has developed a new brand of smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy Alpha aims to deliver the same quality experience as previous entries in the Galaxy series but under a new label and in a new package. This time Samsung has placed an emphasis on aesthetics with a more compact metal-framed design, while offering a blend of premium and mid-range features.

Samsung's thinnest smartphone
The Samsung Galaxy Alpha features a compact new design with a more aesthetic look and premium feel than any of Samsung's previous Galaxy mobiles. Samsung ditched the all-plastic design of the past and added a sturdy aluminum frame to the Alpha. The Galaxy Alpha also comes with a matte finish, and the rear casing looks quite similar to the shell of Samsung's Galaxy S5 and is constructed of the same soft-touch polycarbonate material. Measuring only a quarter of an inch (7mm) thick, the Alpha is also Samsung's thinnest handset to date. Compared to the S5, the Galaxy Alpha is thinner, lighter, and much easier to hold on to.

Fingerprint security
Samsung's new fingerprint security technology made its debut on the Galaxy S5 and has since appeared on several of Samsung's mobile devices. Just like on the S5, the fingerprint reader on the Samsung Galaxy Alpha works by swiping your finger vertically over the sensor located within the Note's home button. You can use your fingerprint to unlock the Alpha, verify your identity when making purchases via PayPal, or when purchasing mobile content through Samsung services.

Health and fitness tracking
Another feature that has migrated over from the Galaxy S5 to the Galaxy Alpha is Samsung's heart rate monitor and S Health app. The heart rate sensor is located on the back of the Alpha, but has been repositioned to the left side of the rear camera instead of just under it like on the Glaxy S5. With Samsung's S Health app you can measure your heart rate and track your fitness activities.

Super AMOLED display technology
The Samsung Galaxy Alpha features a 4.7-inch (119mm) Super AMOLED display panel with a moderate 1280x720 resolution, 16 million colors, and a 313 pixel density. The Galaxy Alpha's 4.7-inch display is very close in size to the display of the 2012 Galaxy S3, and they also share the same AMOLED display technology and 720p resolution. But when compared to the higher 1080p resolution of the Galaxy S5, the Alpha's display is obviously dated. Despite the moderate resolution however, the Super AMOLED display quality on the Galaxy Alpha is far better than what you'll get with most mid-range smartphones.

Same hardware as the Galaxy S5
The Galaxy Alpha runs on the same hardware as Samsung's Galaxy S5. The U.S. version comes with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with a clock speed of 2.5 GHz, an Adreno 330 graphics processor, and 2 GB of RAM. Whereas the international version features an Exynos 5 Octa processor and an ARM Mali T628MP6 graphics processor. Both version of the Alpha come with 32 GB of storage space and are lacking a MicroSD card slot.

Premium cameras
Camera specs on the Samsung Galaxy Alpha are near those of the Galaxy S5, and many of the same premium camera features of the S5 are also available on the Alpha. The Galaxy Alpha comes with a 12 megapixel rear camera and a 2 megapixel cam at the front. Camera features include an LED flash, autofocus, real time HDR, Ultra HD and 4K video recording, and an improved image sensor with Samsung's ISOCELL technology.

Battery life
The Samsung Galaxy Alpha comes with a smaller sized battery than the Galaxy S5. The Alpha is also powering a smaller 720p resolution display however, so the drain on the battery life isn't as taxing as the higher resolution display of the S5. The Galaxy Alpha also comes with Samsung's Ultra Power Saving Mode which helps to minimize battery consumption by shutting down unnecessary features while still allowing access to basic mobile functions.

Android 4.4 KitKat with Samsung's TouchWiz UX interface
The Galaxy Alpha runs a custom version of Android's 4.4.4 KitKat with Samsung's TouchWiz Nature UX 3.0 serving as a front-end for the operating system. Samsung's TouchWiz has been updated for improved user friendliness, and features a cleaner interface with less clutter, larger icons, and added visual cues. The Samsung Galaxy Alpha comes with much of the same software as the Galaxy S5, however, the Alpha ships with an updated Android KitKat and will also receive an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop upon its release.

This time Samsung has placed an emphasis on aesthetics with a more compact metal-framed design, while offering a blend of premium and mid-range features.

Samsung's thinnest smartphone
The Samsung Galaxy Alpha SM-G850FZWEBTU features a compact new design with a more aesthetic look and premium feel than any of Samsung's previous Galaxy mobiles. Samsung ditched the all-plastic design of the past and added a sturdy aluminum frame to the Alpha. The Galaxy Alpha SM-G850FZWEBTU also comes with a matte finish, and the rear casing looks quite similar to the shell of Samsung's Galaxy S5 and is constructed of the same soft-touch polycarbonate material. Measuring only a quarter of an inch (7mm) thick, the Alpha SM-G850FZWEBTU is also Samsung's thinnest handset to date. Compared to the S5, the Galaxy Alpha is thinner, lighter, and much easier to hold on to.

Fingerprint security
Samsung's new fingerprint security technology made its debut on the Galaxy S5 and has since appeared on several of Samsung's mobile devices. Just like on the S5, the fingerprint reader on the Samsung Galaxy Alpha SM-G850FZWEBTU works by swiping your finger vertically over the sensor located within the Note's home button. You can use your fingerprint to unlock the Alpha, verify your identity when making purchases via PayPal, or when purchasing mobile content through Samsung services.

Health and fitness tracking
Another feature that has migrated over from the Galaxy S5 to the Galaxy Alpha SM-G850FZWEBTU is Samsung's heart rate monitor and S Health app. The heart rate sensor is located on the back of the Alpha SM-G850FZWEBTU, but has been repositioned to the left side of the rear camera instead of just under it like on the Glaxy S5. With Samsung's S Health app you can measure your heart rate and track your fitness activities.

Super AMOLED display technology
The Samsung Galaxy Alpha SM-G850FZWEBTU features a 4.7-inch (119mm) Super AMOLED display panel with a moderate 1280x720 resolution, 16 million colors, and a 313 pixel density. Despite the moderate resolution however, the Super AMOLED display quality on the Galaxy Alpha SM-G850FZWEBTU is far better than what you'll get with most mid-range smartphones.

Same hardware as the Galaxy S5
The Galaxy Alpha SM-G850FZWEBTU runs on the same hardware as Samsung's Galaxy S5. The U.S. version comes with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with a clock speed of 2.5 GHz, an Adreno 330 graphics processor, and 2 GB of RAM. Whereas the international version features an Exynos 5 Octa processor and an ARM Mali T628MP6 graphics processor. Both version of the Alpha come with 32 GB of storage space and are lacking a MicroSD card slot.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Review

Samsung has delivered a new addition to their premium Galaxy Note series and it looks to be the most impressive evolution we have seen yet. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 builds upon the legacy of its predecessors while offering plenty of new enhancements and updates.

The Note 4 includes Samsung's trendsetting large-sized phablet display, iconic S Pen stylus, and all the popular features and innovations of past Note devices. Some of the new features include an updated higher-resolution display, improved S Pen, fingerprint security, new sensors, updated hardware, increased storage capacity, and a fast battery charging feature.

A refreshed design
Samsung's Galaxy Note 4 features a refreshed design based on its predecessor the Galaxy Note 3. One of the main differences is Samsung's use of an aluminum frame and buttons, which gives the Note 4 a more polished look and sturdier feel than the chrome colored plastic we have seen on previous generation Notes. The rear cover of the Galaxy Note 4 features a soft-touch faux leather textured backing which provides a secure and comfortable gripping surface. And thankfully Samsung has decided to ditch the fake stitch pattern that adorned the rear of the Galaxy Note 3.

Fingerprint security
Samsung's new fingerprint security technology made its debut on the Galaxy S5 and has since appeared on several of Samsung's mobile devices, but this is the first time it has appeared on the Galaxy Note. Just like on the S5, the fingerprint reader on the Galaxy Note 4 works by swiping your finger vertically over the sensor located within the Note's home button. You can use your fingerprint to unlock the Note 4, verify your identity when making purchases via PayPal, or when purchasing mobile content through Samsung services.

Health and fitness tracking
Other features that have migrated over from the Galaxy S5 to the Galaxy Note 4 include Samsung's S Health app and heart rate monitor. The heart rate sensor is located on the rear of the Note 4, just under the camera. The Galaxy Note 4 also includes an ultraviolet or UV sensor which can be used to measure ultraviolet radiation. With Samsung's S Health app you can measure your heart rate, check UV levels, and track your fitness activities with the help of the Note's various sensors.

Advanced S Pen stylus
The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 features an updated S Pen with double the touch sensitivity of the Note 3's stylus. The increased sensitivity improves the S Pen's accuracy and gives the stylus a far more natural feel when using it to write, take notes, or draw on Galaxy Note 4's screen. Samsung has also updated several of the S Pen's features and added a few new ones as well. New additions include a Smart Select editing feature, a photo editing feature called Photo Note, and new fountain pen and calligraphy writing options.

Premium Super AMOLED display
Samsung has updated the Super AMOLED display panel on the Galaxy Note 4 to a sharper Quad HD (2K) resolution. The display features an improved 2560x1440 resolution with a 515 pixels-per-inch density and is protected by a sheet of scratch resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

The difference in display quality between the Galaxy Note 4 and last year's Galaxy Note 3 is quite noticeable. The Galaxy Note 4's Quad HD display includes 1.6 million more pixels than the Galaxy Note 3, so graphics appear sharper and clearer as a result. The Galaxy Note 4 offers a very rich viewing experience with vivid colors, high contrasts, improved brightness and wider viewing angles.

Increased processing power and more storage space
Internally, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 comes with several hardware improvements, including a more powerful quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor with a faster 2.7 GHz clock speed, and an updated Adreno graphics processor. The Galaxy Note 4 also includes a higher capacity 128 GB MicroSD expansion slot, doubling the storage space that was available on the Galaxy Note 3.
