Apple iPad Air 2 MH332LL/A Review

Just last year the original iPad Air made its debut featuring a much improved thinner and lighter iPhone inspired design. This year Apple continues the trend with the second-generation iPad Air by reducing the dimensions and weight of the tablet even further. Along with the thinner profile, the iPad Air 2 also brings with it a number of significant updates, including the addition of Apple's Touch ID fingerprint technology, several new hardware upgrades, and Apple's latest iOS 8 operating system.

Apple's thinnest tablet
The Apple iPad Air 2 MH332LL/A measures slightly less than a quarter of an inch (6mm) thick and weighs less than a pound. At less than half the width and only two thirds the weight of the original iPad, the iPad Air 2 MH332LL/A definitely lives up to it's "Air" name and is the thinnest tablet Apple has released so far.

Apart from the new dimensions, however, the Apple iPad Air 2 MH332LL/A features the typical iPad fashion and familiar unibody design of the first-generation iPad Air. The shell of the iPad Air 2 MH332LL/A is constructed from a high-grade aluminum and provides a sturdy protective case for the iPad's delicate internals. And the front of the iPad Air 2 MH332LL/A features the same slim bezel design as its predecessor.

Fully-laminated Retina display
Just like the first-generation iPad Air that came before it, the iPad Air 2 MH332LL/A features Apple's popular Retina display technology. The Retina's specs are the same as when the technology first debuted on the iPad 3 —a 9.7-inch (250mm) panel with a 2048x1536 resolution and a 3-million pixel count.

There is an important difference between the Retina display panel on the iPad Air 2 MH332LL/A and the Retina panels of older iPad models, however. This year Apple had the Retina display fully-laminated, a manufacturing process which bonds the panel to the glass cover and eliminates the gap that is normally present. Lamination, also known as optical bonding, actually enhances the display quality and results in more vibrant colors and sharper looking graphics, while increasing viewing angles, and improving contrast. The process also includes an anti-reflective coating which reduces screen glare on the iPad Air 2 MH332LL/A by 56 percent.

Touch ID fingerprint security
Apple's Touch ID fingerprint recognition technology made its debut last year on the iPhone 5S and has now become a feature available on the iPad. Touch ID encrypts and securely stores your fingerprint locally, allowing you to unlock the iPad Air 2 MH332LL/A with just the touch of your finger. You can also use Touch ID to authenticate and approve of purchases from the App Store, iTunes, and iBooks Stores, as well as make payments via the iPad's new Apple Pay feature.

Checkout with Apple Pay
Apple Pay is a new mobile payment system which debuted on the iPhone 6. Just like on the iPhone, Apple Pay allows you to store your credit or debit card information securely on the iPad Air 2 MH332LL/A. However, Apple Pay works a little differently on the iPad Air 2 MH332LL/A, which is limited to in-app purchases and doesn't support retail purchases like the iPhone does. After all, who wants to lug an iPad into the store just to make a payment? Despite this notable difference, however, Apple Pay on the iPad Air 2 MH332LL/A allows for quick in-app checkouts and works similarly to how it does on the iPhone 6.

High-performance hardware
Apple has updated the internals on the iPad Air 2 MH332LL/A which includes their latest 64-bit A8X chipset, along with an upgraded graphics processor and Apple's M8 motion coprocessor. Apple finally moved beyond their preference for dual-core chips with the A8X, adding a third core and making the A8X the first iPad processor with more than two cores. Along with the upgraded chipset, the Apple iPad Air 2 MH332LL/A also features a RAM upgrade from 1 to 2 GB, effectively doubling system memory.

Hardware upgrades on the Apple iPad Air 2 MH332LL/A result in much faster and smoother system performance, leading to a noticeable improvement in the overall end-user experience. Apple's A8X chipset provides a 40 percent increase in CPU performance and 2.5 times the graphics performance of the original iPad Air.

The iSight camera has been upgraded from 5 to 8-megapixels and features a new burst photo shooting mode and slo-mo video.
