Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 Review

Samsung's Galaxy Tab series offers core tablet functionality at a fraction of the price of higher-end devices. The fourth generation mid-range mobile brings with it a fresh new look, hardware upgrades, updated software and a custom version of Android's KitKat operating system.

Highly portable compact design
Samsung departed from last year's look and opted for a more angular and tapered style for their fourth generation tablet. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 features rounded corners and a flatter edge for the top and bottom bezels instead of the sloped style of the Galaxy Tab 3. The shell is constructed of a light-weight polycarbonate with dimensions that are similar to last year's tablet. The Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 has a thin metallic trim that wraps around its edges, and a textured faux-leather material on the rear that provides a more comfortable gripping surface.

Colorful high-definition display
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 features a 8-inch display panel with a moderate 1280x800 HD resolution and a pixel density of 189 pixels-per-inch. While not as high-resolution as Samsung's higher-end Galaxy Tab Pro models, the Galaxy Tab 4 display still manages to provide a nice viewing experience with vibrant colors, rich graphics, and wide viewing angles.

Quad-core processing power
Samsung has improved the hardware on the Galaxy Tab 4, including a more powerful quad-core processor upgraded from the previous generation's dual-core chip. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 features a faster quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz. System memory has also been upgraded, from the Galaxy Tab 3's single gigabyte of RAM, to 1.5 GB on the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0. The new hardware improvements result in a considerable boost to overall system performance.

Basic cameras
Cameras on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 can be described as fairly basic, offering standard functionality with a minimum of features. A 3 megapixel camera is located on the rear of the tablet, with a 1.3 megapixel cam at the front. The Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 is lacking some features which are included on Samsung's premium mobiles, such as autofocus and LED flash.

Multi-user and Kids mode
Share the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 with your members your family or friends using Samsung's Multi-user mode feature. With Multi-user you can create up to eight profiles so each user can customize their own settings and log in separately. Kids mode offers a kid-friendly interface for children with customizable parental control features.

Work with multiple apps simultaneously
This year Samsung included their popular Multi Window app on all the tablets in the Galaxy Tab series. Samsung's Multi Window is easily one of the most useful and innovative features available on the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0. With Multi Window you can work with more than one app simultaneously in side-by-side windowed mode. Multi Window also allows transferring data between applications and drag-and-drop gestures.

Android 4.4 KitKat with Samsung's TouchWiz UX interface
The Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 runs a custom version of Android's 4.4 KitKat with Samsung's TouchWiz Nature UX 3.0 serving as a front-end for the operating system. Samsung's TouchWiz has been updated for improved user friendliness, and features a cleaner interface with less clutter, larger icons, and added visual cues.

Free content with Galaxy Perks
Samsung's Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 also comes with a Galaxy Perks package including free content and services. Galaxy Perks includes $10 Google Play credit, three months of SiriusXM Internet Radio, 50GB of Dropbox space, three free audio book from Audible, and more.
